Pattern: Verde Fleur

I’ve done a lot of soul searching recently during the Art & Business of Surface Pattern Design Ecourse…and more pattern experiments.  This is the direction that I find very exciting. I would love to see this pattern come to life one day!  Seeing my patterns go down the runway would be a dream come true. I’ve entered this pattern into a scarf design contest so please vote if you would like!

Logo Design: The Old Moon Company

I recently did a logo design for a local jewelry company called, The Old Moon Company.  I was so happy that they chose a logo which incorporated one of my surface pattern designs!  Please visit them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter or shop at their Etsy Store!

About The Old Moon Company:

All our Jewellery is hand made! We find, clean, polish, and wrap all the minerals and stones, then design them into one of a kind pieces. Everything we do is inspired by nature and walking lightly on our earth :)

And here is the original surface pattern design:

Pattern & Inspiration

so excited to share some pics of the actual fabric i received from Spoonflower yesterday! i also am showing how the fabric started. sketches of ink on paper, scanned, arranged, and colored in adobe illustrator.  i created these while taking an awesome Surface Pattern Ecourse online with Rachael Taylor & Beth Nicholls.

You may be seeing a few handmade products using these fabrics in the coming weeks!  if you want to buy some please visit my Spoonflower shop.  You can choose from 8 different fabrics on Spoonflower!

This one is printed on a heavy cotton twill…such a nice weight & softness to it.

This one is printed on a linen-cotton canvas so a little stiffer.

I love how the diamonds change direction when it folds.

NeuYear: Productivity Calendar Giveaway!

I am in love with my 2012 productivity calendar from kickstarter NeuYear.  It has helped me lay out my plans for the week / month / year all at one glance.  And the design is a fabulous, minimalist one that will work either vertically & horizontally depending which side you use.  I have one of the great calendars to GIVE AWAY to one of you!  All you have to do is leave a comment on this post about what your big goal is for the year and I’ll select a random winner next Wednesday, April 25!

***UPDATE: Congratulations to commenter #5 Miranda who’s goal is to “My goal for 2012 is to get some grip on the SPD world, making steps into a new career & hoping to get some designs sold….”
I’ll be in touch to collect your address & ship out your calendar soon. ***

You can see more pics of the calendar or purchase your own calendar here if you can’t wait until Wednesday :)

Pattern Update!

WOW!  One of my patterns created in class was featured on the amazing Print & Pattern blog today along with other talented classmates!  The first two designs in the post are by Bethan Janine Westran and she just might be my favorite designer in the e-course.  Also a big fan of Print, Paper, Cloth.

Here’s another water inspired pattern I created called Riptide.  I think I could make a thousand different water patterns.  Must have something to do with being a competitive swimmer!   I created this pattern during the Art & Business of Surface Pattern Design e-course with Rachael Taylor & Beth Nichols.  There is still time to sneak into their next round of classes starting Monday, April 23!  You won’t regret all of the opportunities & bonus goodies they offer!  Have a great day!

My PrintSource NY (Mis)Adventure

I’m home, feet up on couch, resting after my (mis)adventures at PrintSource NY. Almost everything went as planned…my parents came early to watch the kids, hubby dropped me at train in the nick of time, decided to walk the long blocks to Javits Center & found myself wondering why so many (not gay) men were entering this print/pattern convention. I step inside and see the words AUTO SHOW screaming everywhere! Okaaaay. My heart drops, I know I have the date right, right?! Maybe it’s on another floor and they dont have great signage?! Am I going to pass out?! I walk over to will-call where I am greeted with puzzled looks when I ask about a PrintWhat show? Thank god for the interwebs & iPhone! Turns out my show is way back across town @ 34th & 5th! Doh! I guess I’m lucky that’s really all that went awry. I scarfed a dirty water dog after spending most of my cash on a cab back across town and found the show.

The show itself was a lot smaller than I expected since I had envisioned it all at the Javits Center. I also expected lots of fun, crafty, merchandised booths with people showing off their patterns printed on pillows, bags, notecards, wallpaper, aprons, etc. But lo & behold, it was just patterns patterns patterns printed on sheets of paper tacked to walls & spread on tables! Buyers were seated with the designers/agents flipping the pages until something caught the buyers eye. Interesting. No photography was allowed or else I would have posted an overall shot of the booths.

I enjoyed a few trend seminars at the Future Cafe. Browsed through TONS of amazingly beautiful designs by Amy Ormand of Wooster & Prince. Sat quietly with no interruptions over a cappuccino. Ahhhh. All in all, it was a wonderful break & experience for this Mom.

Now I’m really curious about the Surtex show (which is really held at Javits Center). Has anyone been to Surtex that can provide insight into their booth displays? Is this also just patterns printed on paper or do they do more product mock-ups?

April in full swing!

I feel like I just wrote ‘this post’ yesterday about owning 2012….that was in January and it’s already April?!   I’m headed to PrintSource NY this week which should be a great kick-off to Module 3 of the Surface Pattern E-Course which starts next Monday!  Hoping to meet up with some fellow designers I met through the course.  Did I mention my Cardinal Party Line was featured yesterday on Rachael Taylor & Beth Nichols’ blogs?!

We’ve had some great weather which got us a headstart with Spring cleaning & yardwork.  Remember that garden that I thought was a pipe dream?  Well, here’s the beginnings of it thanks to my lovely family…hope we get some rain soon!  I still need to add a bunch of dirt / peat moss and actually plant things in it!  Hopefully, I’ll pick up a few tips at the Organic Gardening seminar at the library this weekend.I sent out a Spring 2012 Call for Art ‘brief’ to local artists today…a BIG check off my list :) phew.  I’m in the process of applying for a local grant that will help me create & promote more shows like this one that is opening on Friday!
A big shout out to my hubby & both sets of grandparents for coming to the rescue when I’m in need of some private time!  Have a great April everyone!

Some days are diamonds…

That is a pattern I created this morning while the kids ran around like wild chickens. I recently finished up Module 2 of this Surface Pattern E-course and the third module starts April 16th! I can’t wait to learn about monetizing my designs for FIVE weeks. These courses have been chockful of goodness. While I’m not quite ready to launch full fledged into this world yet, I’m happy to be getting the information I need once I am ready! I’m just going to keep building my portfolio for the next year or so and then think about attending trade shows. I love checking in daily to our Flickr group to see what my classmates have made…such a variety of talent.

The past week I’ve been Spring cleaning the yard while Ellie & Leo  are catching frogs in the koi pond. I want to plant so many things but we are currently renting our house so I don’t want to do anything too permanent. I picked up some Gladiola bulbs (deer resistant supposedly) and I’m definitely going to do an herb garden flower box outside of my kitchen. I’d love a raised bed garden with some basic vegetables but I may be reaching too far on that one! On April 14, our local library is having a ‘Spring Planting’ lecture with the fab felter, Gar Wang!

I’ve also been pulling together an art show here and looking at artists’ work for future shows this year. There is so much inspiring talent in my hometown! Our local arts council has started ‘Artist Salons’ on the last Thursday of each month and I can’t wait to meet more creative souls next week!

I better get the kids, I think they are rubber stamping each other!
